Historic Wilmington and the surrounding area is rich with colorful history. Spanish Galleon's, Revolutionary and Civil War battles and occupation, pirates, and blockade runners are just a part of the story. Several great plantations still stand preserved including Poplar Grove Plantation, a peanut plantation purchased in 1795; Orton Plantation an historic landscape designed around the 1735 mansion and colonial rice fields overlooking the Cape Fear River; and Airlie Gardens, originally a land grant from King George II to the Ogden brothers in 1735, now a magnificent public formal garden.
Downtown Wilmington sits proudly on the Cape Fear River offering up great outdoor dining, a rich cultural energy comprised of multiple
galleries, Thalian Hall, The Red Barn Theatre, many theatre companies, plus UNCW and it's venue for international performances.
There is an antique district, a national historic registry and many sites of interest in and around Wilmington, including Greenfield Gardens, a lake front park featuring bald cypress and live oak trees, azaleas, camellias, roses, and crape myrtles built during the 1930s with WPA workers.
No matter what your interests you will find the Wilmington area has many delightful diversions. If you want to venture a little farther Ft. Fisher Historic Museum and battlefield and the NC Aquarium are just 30 minutes south at the mouth of the Cape Fear River. The Duplin Winery is about 30 minutes north, up I-40; Silver Coast Winery, and Ingram Planetarium are about 30 minutes south west down Hwy 17. An hour away you will find vacation mecca Myrtle Beach.
